INNER CHILD THERAPY
What is Inner Child Therapy?
This is a method of therapy where the Inner Child (everyone has one !) can be accessed, and negative conditioning's, traumas, etc can be positively addressed. The Child within is a delightful part of us; spontaneous; mischievous; the sparkling part of our personality. The contra aspect is that the child within can throw tantrums, behave unreasonably or inappropriately.
How does a session work?
This session generally takes around 3 hours. It is designed to reconnect people to a lost part of self; the inner child that may be hidden away inside. A part of that, as a result of not feeling safe or fully loved, may have hidden away deep inside; this is simply a protection mechanism that everyone has and everyone will have felt wounded by something at some point in their childhood. In the session, a safe space is created using the state of hypnosis, the inner child is then invited in and asked to speak, to identify where, and when, the wounding first occurred; then real healing can begin as you promise to protect and honour this part of the self.
In order for the inner child to understand the events that happened in childhood, it is important for them to go back and be a witness to the events that happened to their own parents (or caregivers) when they were children. These insights are powerful and profound; and once the awareness arises of what their parents were having to deal with then the journey continues… all the way back to the very first ancestors who made mistakes; perhaps they were too focused on survival and forgot to take care of and nurture their children; perhaps they lived in fear or used anger as their strength. Whatever the case may be, a message of love is sent, and the realisation of how much more can be achieved both personally and collectively, this shifts the ancestral awareness; this healing is sent throughout the entire family line.
The inner child sees how things would have been different if people had treated each other with love and respect and then gets to imagine how different their own life would have been, and how they would have been different, as a result; this new version of the inner child is then given permission to grow up... feeling stronger, more capable, more confident in themselves and knowing more about who they really are. This version is then fully reintegrated into the adult self and the ‘Individuation’ process that Jung talked about begins to take place; a little like a Shamanic soul retrieval. A new future is then envisioned with all the new potential in place.

What can cause damage to our inner child?
If there has been trauma or damage in childhood, the spontaneous inner child is damaged, and cannot find an outlet; depriving many of the enjoyment and fun that brings. If there has been negative conditioning in childhood, ie the child continually told he/she is "stupid", "worthless", or "you will never amount to much " the adult will always have low self esteem/worth, and never believe they can achieve. If they do achieve, they will class it as an accident, or a lucky mistake. It is important to replace negative childhood conditioning with something more positive, and to allow the adult personality/will to be in control, not the damaged and defensive child's.
Why are these things not addressed while still in childhood?
Childhood traumas are often ignored, or swept under the carpet, by adults around them. Family bereavements etc were seldom explained to children a few years ago, therefore the child's feelings were never validated, or dealt with. The self worth is diminished and shadow areas within the psyche established at that stage.
What is the outcome of not dealing with these issues?
Unless these ARE brought out into the light, looked at and dealt with, they can be crippling and can mean that the bearer will never achieve their full potential. Childhood abuse of any kind can also be dealt with and much of the fear, low self esteem, inhibition and sadness lifted.
How does this type of therapy work?
Inner child work is a powerful tool which is designed to free up and release hidden emotions within that can lead to all kinds of problems if not dealt with. It is designed to sensitively and positively deal with these events by healing; not re-traumatising; enabling the client to take back control of their thinking, their behaviours and as a result... their lives.
Is there any evidence to prove this can be of help?
Healing unhelpful ideas and beliefs that have been passed down through the ancestral family line is essential. There is now an entirely new field called Epigenetics which has studied this in great details. Dr Bruce Lipton has discovered these messages are encoded into human DNA and provide the framework through which children experience the world. This idea is built into the Inner Child session and, as a result, healing can be applied to specific areas where the individual parents may have experienced challenges of their own.
