FAQ'S
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, anyone can be hypnotised as long as they want to. With the right person and using the right technique. People cannot, however, be forced in to hypnosis against their will.
Do people lose control?
No. Hypnosis is about giving control back. The hypnotherapist has no control over their client and cannot compel them to do anything they do not want to do. The subconscious mind is there to protect them and would interrupt at any point where they felt unsure. People can choose to enter and to leave the hypnotic state at any point they wish.
Do people go to sleep?
No.'Hypnotic sleep' has no resemblance to normal sleep. The body and mind will be deeply relaxed but they will still be alert, often with a sense of heightened awareness. They would not learn much or tap into inner resources if they were asleep. The use of the word sleep is simply to induce sleep like, deep states of relaxation.
Are there any side effects?
There are absolutely no negative effects from hypnotherapy. It is a totally natural, safe process which allows people to feel very relaxed, calm and as a result more confident in themselves and their abilities.
How many sessions do people need?
This varies from person to person depending on the problem. Hypnotherapy is a brief strategic therapy. Often one session is enough, especially as people are taught self hypnosis or techniques they can use at home to reinforce the work that happens in the session. Sometimes one to three sessions are needed. It all depends on the individual. People will always be given the skills to maintain and continue the work in their own space and time.
What is a hypnotic state like?
Everyone experiences the state differently. The most common theme reported is a feeling of pleasant deep relaxation. This natural, altered state of awareness, allows people to become oblivious to external distractions and get in touch with the inner powerful version of themselves, which has the solution to all of their problems.
Is it possible to get stuck in a trance?
No! People are free to come out of the trance state at any time they choose. They are completely in control of their own experience. Some people find that they are so deeply relaxed and comfortable that they do not wish to leave the state at the end of the session. However they will always leave the session feeling fully alert and grounded. Self hypnosis, when practiced last thing at night, can sometimes drift into natural sleep allowing people to awaken refreshed alert and ready to face the day ahead.
Can you make people dance like a chicken?
Only if they want to!! On a serious note, stage hypnosis and clinical hypnosis are very different. Stage hypnosis exists purely for entertainment value. It relies on the exhibitionist nature of the people who have volunteered. These people are usually extroverts who enjoy entertaining an audience. On the other hand clinical hypnosis is very much a partnership between therapist and client and works towards a resolution of problems and the instigation of positive changes in a persons life.
Do people remember what happened?
Yes. However, like anything they hear or learn they will retain some of the information but not all of it. This is true of any lecture or talk people may attend. They may find that their attention wanders at times and they do not seem to recall all that was said. This simply means that the conscious mind feels safe to drift while the unconscious is doing the work it needs to do.
What is the difference between 'hypnosis' and 'hypnotherapy'?
Hypnosis refers to the 'state' that the person experiences, whilst hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to facilitate positive changes to emotional, medical and psychological problems.
Can people use hypnosis at home?
Absolutely! Self hypnosis is an invaluable tool that people can use for life. It is a brilliant de-stressor which has the capacity to greatly reduce anxiety and boost confidence. It is a self-help tool that everyone should acquire and is usually taught within the first sessions.
What does a typical session entail?
The initial session begins with a confidential, detailed discussion outlining the issues causing concern and the goal of the therapy. It is a time for people to ask as many questions as they need, to put to rest any misconceptions about hypnosis. A brief overview of the required treatment will be given and then usually, time depending, a short experience of the hypnotic state itself. Subsequent sessions consist of a split between discussion and hypnosis.
How can hypnotherapy help resolve problems?
During hypnosis people are mentally and physically relaxed. This in itself is highly beneficial as a stress reliever. This relaxed state results in the mind working more efficiently. In hypnosis, there is a reduction of critical analysis, so people are more susceptible to beneficial suggestions and other techniques, that may have been dismissed at a conscious level , due to lack of confidence or self belief. This increases the level of success tenfold. It is also in this relaxed state that people can gain insights and obtain resources used in the past, or acquire resources form the future to help resolve problems.
Can hypnosis cure anything?
The truth is that hypnosis is not a blanket panacea, but it can be used to treat many symptoms especially those linked with stress. Hypnosis works directly with the autonomic nervous system which controls many of the bodily functions. Just the simple act of relaxation can create great improvements throughout mind and body.
Can only weak willed or unintelligent people be hypnotised?
No, almost everyone can go into a trance, circumstances, time, willingness of the subject and the competence of the hypnotist are all varying factors. People are going into naturally occurring trances all the time. Watching a great movie, reading a good book or simply driving in a car, (when they go into auto pilot and arrive at their destination without consciously knowing how they got there).
