Case Study: Confidence & Fear of Water
Martin came to see me because a deep lack of confidence was holding him back from fulfilling his potential. He also experienced a strong fear of water - a phobic response that had prevented him from enjoying holidays or engaging in activities involving water. Naturally quiet and reserved, Martin was very aware that something deeper was driving these patterns and was keen to understand and resolve them.

The Session
As the session began and Martin entered a relaxed state, there was a noticeable shift in his posture and expression. He described finding himself on a swing, becoming aware that he was dressed as a young woman in the early 19th century. Although initially surprised by this, he remained engaged with the experience as it unfolded. He described growing up in a privileged environment, around the year 1821, with a strong desire to contribute something meaningful to the world. He had chosen to train as a nurse and was travelling by ship to Africa to support those in need. As the experience deepened, his emotional state shifted. He became aware of being below deck on the ship, sensing the confined space and atmosphere. The situation quickly changed - the ship had been damaged and was taking on water. He described feeling trapped, unable to escape, and experiencing the overwhelming panic of drowning.

The Insight
At the end of this life, Martin became aware of a powerful emotional imprint: A sense of deep disappointment - that his life, and the potential it held, had been cut short. From this, an unconscious decision had been formed: to avoid risk, to stay small, and not to fully engage with life in order to avoid future disappointment.
This insight clearly mirrored his present-day experience - his lack of confidence, his reluctance to take opportunities, and his tendency to hold himself back. It also provided a meaningful context for his fear of water.

The Healing Process
During the therapeutic phase of the session, Martin was able to revisit this experience with greater awareness and perspective. He recognised that the core lesson of that life had been about taking opportunities and embracing potential, rather than avoiding risk. Through this process, he was able to:
  • Release the emotional weight connected to that experience
  • Let go of the unconscious decision to “stay small”
  • Reframe the meaning of the experience in a more empowering way

The Outcome
Following the session, Martin reported a significant shift. His understanding of his fear of water changed - what had once felt overwhelming and uncontrollable now felt understandable and no longer necessary. His confidence began to grow, and he made practical changes in his life, including moving into a new role that allowed him to develop his strengths more fully. Qualities he had previously seen as limitations - such as his sensitivity - became recognised as valuable assets.

Reflection
This case highlights how deeply held patterns can be rooted in experiences beyond conscious awareness - and how, when understood and resolved, they can lead to meaningful and lasting change.
